I loved this article. It’s like we were playing a game of Telephone and the author was the last one in the line. (You know Telephone, right – you pass a message down the line and see how mixed up it can get by the time it reaches the end of the line.)
A Dwarfs Tale: Richard Armitage as Thorin Oakenshield
by HOBBIT MOVIE NEWS on APRIL 17, 2013
Well, the Hobbit has always been a fan favorite for many and one of the forerunners of the High Fantasy setting. Older than those who fully embraced the concept such as Dungeons and Dragons and Warhammer Fantasy Battle, The Hobbit, along with the Lord of the Rings trilogy led the way for many other elements of fantasy that would come along after it. As such, it enjoys the status of being one of the most well-read stories of our time and has not lost print since the shortage of paper near the days of World War II.
That is why there has never been a greater honor for actor Richard Armitage to be able to portray Thorin Oakenshield, the stalwart leader of the thirteen dwarves in the story and whose exploits are the stuff of legend for his own people. An actor with relatively humble beginnings as a stage actor in Budapest, he had soon reached England to become an even more bigger name and soon began his foray into many mainstream films that would eventually pave the way for him to reach his current role in this prequel installment for the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Although at first, he mostly played in musicals instead of actual live-action movies. It was only after he had become quite tired of an uneventful career in making musicals did he decide to take up acting in live-action shows even though said roles were often minor. During his days when he played smaller roles in films, Richard Armitage has always given his best when giving life to a character he will portray in a specific film. And through his perseverance and skill, he finally made it into mainstream movies and he made his first landmark when he played as the nefarious spy of Captain America fame who sabotaged the project. While a relatively minor role, it was his dedication to his role that impressed enough people to assign him in a higher role.
Richard Armitage has gone on to admit that he is a “method actor” and prefers not to simply “pretend” to be his character but “believe” in his character. He found it a great honor to become what he says to be a character from one of his favorite stories as a child. So far, he has done quite well for himself in the film and is set to be cast again in the role of Thorin Oakenshield in the second installment of the Lord of the Rings prequel trilogy, The Desolation of Smaug.
So far, Richard Armitage has played his role well and is often compared to Viggo Mortensen who played as Aragorn in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, the leader of the Fellowship of the Ring. A truly superlative performance, one can argue that Richard Armitage fully became Thorin Oakenshield, one of the last kings of the dwarves, when he took on the role and few can debate that he is indeed the stoic leader of the company of dwarves featured in the movie.
